What we do

Plastering, and the work that goes around it

Why Ignat

What you're actually paying for

You notice bad plastering, not good plastering. Ripples that appear when the afternoon light comes across the wall, hairline cracks three weeks after you've painted, a shadow line running down the middle of a ceiling. When it's done right there's nothing to look at, which is rather the point.

Most of that comes down to preparation nobody ever sees. Protecting the room, getting the backing coats right, mixing for the substrate you've actually got rather than the one you'd like, and waiting for each stage to go off before starting the next. It takes longer and we price it that way, but it's the reason the finish is still flat in five years.

  • One team, start to finish. The people who quote your job are the people who turn up to do it.
  • Fixed written prices. Itemised before we start, and the invoice at the end matches it.
  • We clean up. Floors covered, furniture sheeted, debris taken away, and a hoover run before we leave.
  • Straight answers. If a job needs a specialist or a different approach, we'll tell you rather than take the money.

Questions

Things people ask us

How long before I can paint new plaster?

Usually four to seven days, though it depends on the room, the season and how much ventilation there is. You're waiting for the colour to go from dark patchy brown to an even pale pink. Then put a mist coat on first, meaning emulsion watered down to roughly 70/30, before any topcoats. Skip that step and fresh plaster drinks the paint straight in, then it peels off a few months later.

Do you charge for quotes?

No. Visiting, measuring and pricing your job is free, and there's nothing to pay if you decide not to go ahead. We'd rather price it properly in person than guess over the phone and change the number later.

How much does it cost to skim a room?

It depends on the size, the height, the condition of what's underneath and whether it needs boarding first. That's why we quote after seeing a room rather than publishing a price list. Send dimensions and a photo though and we'll give you a rough figure before we visit.

How much mess does plastering make?

Less than you're expecting, if it's done properly. Floors get covered, anything staying in the room gets sheeted, and we clear debris as we go rather than leaving it all to the end. Twenty minutes spent protecting a room saves a couple of hours cleaning it.

Can you plaster over artex?

Often yes. A bonding coat and a skim will flatten it out. Where the artex is heavily textured or has come loose, over-boarding gives a better result and that's what we'd suggest instead. We'll tell you which applies once we've seen it. One warning: artex from before 2000 can contain asbestos, so we never sand or scrape it. If nobody knows how old it is, get it tested before anyone touches it.

Do you work with landlords and letting agents?

Regularly. Void turnarounds, making good damage between tenancies, full refurbishments. We know how tight those deadlines get and can work to a fixed handover date.

Are you insured?

Yes. We carry public liability insurance and will send the certificate over before work starts if you ask for it. Ignat Construction Ltd is also a registered UK limited company, number 16480006, which you can look up on the Companies House register.

How far in advance should I book?

For a single room, usually a week or two. Larger renovations need more planning, so the earlier you talk to us the better. Small repairs we can often fit in sooner, so it's worth asking even at short notice.
